What is the LEBUS® system?

Optimum rope spooling thanks to LEBUS®

At LEBUS® in Finning / Bavaria, we refer to our approach as the LEBUS® System. Why? Because we have developed and enhanced a complete range of products around the LEBUS® groove. The LEBUS® System includes two split sleeves that are either bolted or welded to plain drums, or grooved drums featuring the iconic LEBUS® groove.

The LEBUS® system in detail

Practically unlimited possibilities

The LEBUS® manufacturing processes enable wire ropes to be spooled in an organized, precise geometry, allowing multiple layers to be wound with accuracy. This ensures that the spooling process remains safe, controlled and highly reliable.

As a result, there are virtually no limits to the applications of LEBUS® wire spooling technology on tankers, freighters, passenger ships, oil rigs, cranes, drill towers, cable cars, and even diving bells. The system’s versatility guarantees its effectiveness in any demanding environment regardless.

The technology of the LEBUS® system

Functionality and results

At our production facilities in Finning am Amersee, Bavaria, we use heavy-duty lathes to groove LEBUS® rope drums up to 4.20m in diameter and 6m in length. The grooves are designed to ensure that the rope runs precisely parallel to the drum flanges, maintaining the perfect spooling geometry.

What sets the LEBUS® System apart is the design of the crossover areas. Thanks to the end fill pieces, the transition from one layer to the next is seamless, ensuring that the rope follows its intended path with exact precision. At these crossing points, the LEBUS® groove crosses twice half the diameter of the rope, which ensures the correct winding pitch per drum revolution.

This innovative technology is trusted by companies around the world. LEBUS® provides a parallel rope guidance across approximately 70% of the drum circumference. The rope is spooled in a pyramidal manner, with each layer supporting the other through the rope flanks. This optimal rope guidance system is a unique feature of LEBUS®, ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability, and safety.

LEBUS® Accessories

Safely guided

To ensure steel or synthetic ropes run securely and efficiently on rope drums and LEBUS® systems, we provide the perfect accessories. Levelwinders are installed to correct excessively large fleet angles, ensuring the rope remains in proper alignment. If the angles are too small, we use kickers. The LEBUS® accessories are designed for quick installation and are customized to fit each specific rope drum.

The advantages of the LEBUS® system

For 60 years, we have been supplying the international industry from Germany with the reliable LEBUS® wire rope spooling technology. The reason many companies choose the original LEBUS® system lies in its technical and economic advantages:

Safety

Safety

Safety

The optimal LEBUS® rope guidance system enhances safety for both personnel and machinery. We ensure consistent, secure, and controlled winding of wire ropes, even under heavy loads and high speeds. Our technology also prevents rope abrasion, crushing, or the formation of rope and drum vibrations.

Lifespan

Lifespan

One of our key advantages is the optimal load distribution of the rope across the windings. The LEBUS® groove ensures that the rope is wound evenly from one flange to the next and across each layer. This results in a perfect spool pattern, which significantly reduces wear.

Cost savings

Cost savings

For large-scale projects, it's crucial to work cost-effectively. With multiple layers of spooling, shorter drum lengths can be used for your project. This helps save material and, ultimately, money. For existing hoist drums, we manufacture two split sleeves in a retrofit system.

Space saving

Space saving

The relatively small rope drums offer another advantage: space-saving. The multi-layer spooling technology enables considerable rope lengths to be accommodated on smaller drums. These drums stand out due to their low construction weight and compact design, requiring minimal space compared to other conventional systems.
